Get the inside track on what data analysis concepts your middle schoolers understand - and where they are likely to struggle. Discover concepts that are integral to making comparisons, including distribution and measures of spread, measures of center, graphic representation and interpretation, and communication of data-based conclusions.

Math is all around us and you can energize middle school math instruction with real-world challenges. Examine the importance of problem-solving skills, calculators, and the Internet in the classroom while addressing national math standards.

Clarify the concepts of surface area and volume for middle schoolers using nets/maps, interactives and the van Hiele model of geometric thought. Learn how to encourage students' reasoning, while addressing the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards. Utilize PBS's resources such as
Misunderstood Minds, to address students with math disabilities. Create a lesson on surface area and volume.

Get to the heart of the matter. Learn to teach your middle schoolers how to represent, analyze, and generalize a variety of patterns - the very core of algebra. Solve sample pattern problems and connect the mathematics explored in the course with mathematics requirements in your district.

Proportional Reasoning

Teacherline Class

Target middle school students' misconceptions about proportionality, as you learn new ways to teach ratio, proportion, and percents. After exploring various student approaches to proportion problems, and collaborating with other course participants, you'll be prepared to craft a lesson plan designed to teach a concept of proportion using your new knowledge.
