Episode 312

Relax!

George and the Man with the Yellow Hat convince Professor Wiseman to take a well-deserved break from work. Live Action Segment The kids race on an obstacle course with challenge stations to illustrate the repurposing of tools. Each station presents a problem to solve given numerous materials. Each tool can be used to complete the task, but which one completes the task the fastest?

The Box and the Hound

Charkie will do anything to get what's inside of Aunt Margaret's parcel, but George promised he'd keep it safe! After twisting, turning, flipping, and rotating the box, George is able to get it out of sight, but Charkie's keen sense of smell makes it impossible to stay hidden for long. Night of the Weiner Dog!

Poor Hundley! It's the first time he's been apart from the Doorman in over 3 years and George's room isn't exactly this dapper daschund's idea of "neat and orderly." Being a good host, George follows the Doorman's detailed instructions. George accurately measures Hundley's food, graciously lets him watch his favorite TV show, "Poodle Groomers," and even rearranges his living room to make Hundley feel more at home. Though Hundley's strict demands are not George's idea of a fun sleepover, George comes through for his friend by rescuing Hundley's squeaky mouse from the balcony. Now, at last, Hundley can fall asleep! Later that night, when George is having a nightmare, how can Hundley return the favor and help his friend?

Educational Objective (Math): To sort and classify objects based on their shape and function, e.g., bones with bones, toys with toys, etc. To use a measuring cup and fill the amount of liquid or solid to the exact level marked off as 1 cup.

George decides there must be a duckbilled dinosaur on the loose-which would make for a perfect photo for Nature Week! George leaves a trail of fruits and vegetables to lure the dinosaur, but then he remembers that not all dinosaurs are friendly! George frantically rushes to warn everyone, when he bumps into the real culprit behind those tracks - and it’s very different than a dinosaur!

Episode 314

George Measures Up

Chef Pisghetti is cooking one up for the records book — a strand of spaghetti that measures 30 feet! When the Chef leaves for an important appointment, George protects the noodle from being destroyed by a playful Gnocchi. Later, the Chef calls to ask George how tall the building next door is, but George doesn't have anything long enough to measure with... or does he? Chef Pisghetti returns and sees a monkey measuring a building with the world's longest noodle. Now THAT'S one for the record books!

Educational Objective (Math): To estimate and measure height using standard and nonstandard units of measure. To learn that two different nonstandard units of measure can be added together to reach a total amount if they are converted to a standard unit of measure (for example, feet) and added together.

Live Action Segment Using cardboard cutouts of George and Hundley, the kids predict the size of various objects, then accurately measure the object first with George and then with the much smaller Hundley. They observe the inverse relationship: the shortest measure results in the higher number of units.

Something New Under the Sun

To beat the scorching summer heat, George and the Man with the Yellow Hat visit the museum, which is the only place in town with power, due to its new solar energy panel. George sees how the sun can charge batteries, and the Man agrees to make his famous lasagna as a surprise for Dr. Levit's birthday. The Big Picture

George's favorite bird is on the endangered species list! The Man with the Yellow Hat's new book would help spread the bird word, but the bookstore doesn't think people are interested in a 1,400-page novel about a bird. George and Steve devise an attention-grabbing plan that involves an empty billboard and a razzle-dazzle picture to help promote the book, but can a monkey, a whole lot of paint, and a blank canvas save the Cerulean Warbler?

Educational Objectives (Math): To recognize that a picture can be subdivided into equal smaller units. To map and reproduce (represent) the equal units of a small picture proportionately onto a large picture. To label and sequence the equal units by numbering them in order from left to right, top to bottom.

Live Action Segment A classroom of kids is given the task of creating a wall map of South America. The teacher uses a grid to divide the map into small sections, and assigns each section to different student. Each student then draws his or her portion of South America on a larger sheet of paper. When each student is finished, the teacher assembles the huge map on the wall, and even though the students used different colors and objects to create their parts of the map, the entire shape of South America emerges.

Can George figure out a way to build a ramp leading to the window that even the littlest Dachshund legs can climb?

Educational Objectives (Engineering): To explore how simple machines make work easier.

Live Action Segment Four kids are given the option of using the stairs or the ramp to get up a bridge. The kids split up to try both. One group experiences how the ramp reduces the angle of the climb at the expense of distance. The other group learns that the stairs are faster, but harder to climb. They also use objects like a ball and a bicycle to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of both a ramp and stairs.
