Aging (PreK-12)

The science of the aging process and its impact on individuals, relationships and society.

Body Systems & Senses (PreK-12)

Includes the 5 senses; the study of body systems as they pertain to health and well-being; and the effects of the environment on the body's systems.

Conflict Resolution (PreK-12)

Includes the process of resolving a dispute between two or more parties in which the resolution is satisfactory to all parties involved.

Chronic Conditions (K-12)

Includes the study of a condition that lasts a year or longer and requires ongoing care (physical disabilities, psychological impairments, allergies, disease, etc.)

Consumer Health (PreK-12)

Includes the study of strategies for making informed decisions about health products, services and information; also includes the study of health care coverage and the health care industry.

Death & Dying (PreK-12)

Includes the study of death and strategies for coping with death and bereavement.

Disease (K-12)

Includes the study of various illnesses, as well as their causes and symptoms. Considers the social, economic, and political effects of disease on individuals, families and societies.

Family Life (PreK-12)

The study of issues that arise within families having to do with siblings, divorce, remarriage, relocation, etc. Incorporates parenting skills and child development.

Fitness (PreK-12)

The study of, or participation in, exercise and physical activity to keep the body physically fit. Emphasis on general principles of fitness rather than a detailed understanding of the rules and techniques associated with a particular sporting activity.

Human Sexuality (6-12)

The study of similarities and differences between male and female sexuality and the physical, mental, social, and cultural factors that influence attitudes and behaviors regarding sexuality.

Medicine (K-12)

The study of the creation/role of medicine in preventing, treating and curing diseases. Includes the study of medical research and professionals.

Mental/Emotional Health (PreK-12)

Includes lessons/activities that address mental and emotional health issues, including fear, self-esteem, body image, eating disorders, depression, etc.

Motor/Movement Skills (PreK-2)

Includes study or targeted development of gross or fine motor/movement skills.

Nutrition (PreK-12)

Includes study of the nutritional value of foods, healthy dietary practices and diet.

Psychology (6-12)

The formal study of behavior and the development of mental processes. Focuses on the theoretical understanding of mental and emotional development.

Public/World Health (3-12)

Includes the study of domestic and international public health issues, including epidemics, sanitation, overpopulation, etc.

Safety (PreK-12)

The study or practice of behaviors that lead to a safe environment and well-being; examples include following rules/directions, first aid, and playground, bicycle, and traffic safety.

Sense of Self (PreK-2)

The study or development of the awareness of one's self as an individual, including the ability to notice similarities and differences between self and others; also includes recognition of personal attributes.

Social Skills (PreK-12)

The study or practice of behaviors that encourage positive social interaction among peers, between adults and children, or during certain group situations or events. Bullying and other conflict-related skills are located under Conflict Resolution.

Sports (PreK-12)

The study of, or participation in, individual or team sporting events.

Substance Abuse (3-12)

Includes the study of addiction to various substances and strategies for promoting substance abuse control and prevention. Does not encompass all types of addictions; addictions to food, gambling, etc. are included in the "Mental/Emotional Health" category.
