My Classroom Innovation
I have developed a study of art and artists for the children in my preschool class. The children learn about famous artists and then paint in similar styles. The children learn about photography by using the digital camera to record the study from their own perspectives. The children explore painting, clay, dance, music, drama, etc. The children then hold an "Art Gallery Opening " at our local community collage. During the study, I invite local artists into the classroom to share their works with the children. The study includes all content areas. The children learn math by examining Mondrian's "Broadway Boogie" to learn about patterns. They learn about shapes by studying Matisse's collages. The children explore science concepts through activities such as mixing colors by making "color dots". The children participate in cooking experiences, including painting cookies. Literacy is enhanced through reading stories about artists, colors, etc. The children's self-esteem is also greatly enhanced as they learn that they are all artists! Technology is incorporated as the children "paint" in the style of Jackson Pollack on the computer. The response from the local community has been tremendous!
How Students were Engaged
The children are incredibly engaged during this study! The children participate in activities at center times. They have painted in the style of Piet Mondrian, VanGogh, Warhol, etc. The children are eager to participate each day. Even though they are eager, they are still respectful to the other children and patiently wait until it is their turn to participate. The art study builds the children's self-esteem. The children also "fill the buckets" of their friends as they tell the children how their artwork makes them feel. The children are extremely proud to have their artwork displayed at the AEA in Ottumwa.
