My Classroom Innovation
Students in Geometry completed patchwork quilts. Students made a connection with studying types of triangle, special right triangle, congruent triangles and the Pythagorean Theorem with the quilting project. Directions and main resources were given to the students and projected on the SMART board. Students were allowed 30 minutes of the 90 minute class period to completed quilts when the class met . Many students told stories how their parents shared stories about family members( mothers, grandmothers and aunts) quilting circles. So, family history and traditional were passed down. Technology was implemented through the use sewing machines, rotary cutters,IPODs, cellphones and computers for blogging . The main resources for this assignment was quilting 101.com and pbs.org/americaquilts/ . Students listen to various quilters give their account and quilting stories about family, technique ,heroes, and how quilts brought healing to them.
How Students were Engaged
I am proud of my students end results. The quilts and pillows were vibrate with color, and showed dedication with hand stitching the patches together. Students made a connection with studying types of triangle, special right triangle, congruent triangles and the Pythagorean Theorem with the quilting project. Geometry students of XUP/ Mrs. Stewart's Class bridge the real world and textbook book knowledge. Students were excited about selecting fabric, following the pattern given, and hand sewing majority of the quilts. Students blogged and set a table in Xavier's hallway to display thier final pieces and recieved praise from peers, faculty, and staff.
