My Classroom Innovation

The Understanding the Holocaust Project used a virtual world simulation to re-create the streets of Amsterdam 1942 where Anne Frank and her family and 4 others were in hiding. Recreated using descriptions from the book, primary source photographs and writing, as well as, Holocaust educational organizations, this interactive simulation gives students a minds eye look at this time period. Additionally there are 10 Common Core based activities for students to complete that will help give them a unique understanding of the time period. With the help of PBS Masterpiece Theater materials and the DVD we were provided with a great visual companion to the book and the surrounding history.

How Students were Engaged

The student were incredibly engaged and submitted work in a variety of formats from creating a virtual world exhibit, to essays, to multimedia digital storytelling.
