Applied Mathematics (K – 12)

Includes the study of how mathematics is used in other disciplines and real-world contexts.

Calculus (9 – 12)

Involves the study of both differential and integral calculus. Differential calculus is a theory about rates of change, and involves the method of differentiation. Integral calculus involves the idea of integration.

Data Analysis/Probability (PreK – 12)

Involves analyzing, interpreting, and displaying data and critically examining statistical arguments. Probability deals with calculating the likelihood of a given event's occurrence.

Discrete Mathematics (9 – 12)

The study of discrete phenomena and finite processes. Includes the study of counting techniques, matrices, recursion, and graph theory.

Functions and Algebra (6 – 12)

Algebra involves the study of the relationships among quantities, the use of symbols, the modeling of phenomena, and the mathematical study of change. Students at this level write and solve linear equations and inequalities, use properties of rational numbers, and extend their understanding of the relationship between equations and graphs.

Geometry and Spatial Sense (PreK – 12)

The study of spatial relationships. In lower grades emphasis is placed on describing, modeling, drawing, and classifying shapes; relating geometric ideas to number and measurement ideas; and recognizing and appreciating geometry in the world.

Measurement (PreK – 12)

Involves the assignment of a numerical value to an attribute of an object, such as the length of a pencil. At the elementary level, emphasis is placed on students developing an understanding of measurable attributes of objects and units, systems and processes of measurement. In the upper grades, students analyze precision, accuracy, and approximate error in measurement situations.

Numbers and Operations (PreK – 12)

Includes the study of number sense and the development of computational fluency. Number sense involves representing numbers and analyzing the relationships among numbers and number systems. Computation involves performing calculations in different ways.

Patterns and Algebraic Thinking (PreK – 5)

At the lower levels, algebra involves the study of patterns, rules, and symbols. Students at this level make and extend patterns. They also relate word problems to number sentences and simple algebraic expressions and begin to develop the idea of linking an algebraic equation to a graph.

Problem Solving (PreK – 12)

Involves using basic skills and concepts to solve mathematical problems in and out of school. Emphasis is placed on developing a range of strategies for finding solutions to problems and learning to monitor and adjust the strategies in the process of solving a problem.

Statistics (6 – 12)

Involves gathering and displaying data and using measures of central tendency and variability. Includes the use of confidence intervals and hypothesis tests to make estimates.

Trigonometry (9 – 12)

Includes circular functions, right triangle ratios, infinite series and approximations, inverses, identities, and the laws of sines and cosines. Emphasis is placed on finding numerical, graphical, and algebraic solutions to problems.
