As you enjoy the fruits of farmers' labors at the produce stand or farmers market this summer, take some time to think about the math of agriculture!
Two of this month’s activities sprouted out of a new middle school curricula. You can check them out at the Show-Me Center.
This month's feature includes three activities designed to show how farmers and gardeners use math.
Activity 1 deals with using mathematics to grow a vegetable garden. Students use fractions to determine how many plots for each type of vegetable.
In Activity 2, students use percentages to design their own flower gardens.
Activity 3 investigates how farmers calculate field areas as well as crop yields and weight of harvested crops.
