1. 50 mg

2. During the day, the body washes out 40% of the medicine, or 20mg. That leaves 30mg from day 1.

3. 30mg. from day 1 plus 50mg. from day 2 equals a total of 80mg.

4. See the completed table. You may want to have the students use calculators and recursive equations to generate this data. The equation would be NEXT = (NOW * 0.6) + 50.

5. The maximum level of the medicine is 125 mg. At that level, the 40% lost during each day is equal to the 50 mg taken each morning.

6. 0 mg

7. 30 mg.

8. See the completed table. This is always 50 mg less than after taking the pill.

9. The minimal amount of medicine in the body would be 75 mg. The patient obtains a maximum level of 125 mg and loses 40% of that, which reduces it to 75 mg.

10. The level of medicine in the patient’s body will not drop below 50 mg after they have taken the medicine on day 3. Just prior to taking the medicine, the level is 48 mg and the next lowest time would be the next day when it drops to 58.8 mg.

11. The level of medicine will be 42.9 mg, which is equal to 71.5 mg x 0.6 for the amount lost during day 7.
