Objective

After designing and constructing parachutes, students use the distance formula to determine the rate of descent and with this information look for similarities in design.

Overview of the Lesson

Through discussion, students realize that the design of a parachute will have an effect on the length of the parachutes “hang time.” Students are presented with the problem of constructing a parachute that will have a maximum hang time. Then students construct their own parachute using the available materials. Students then drop their parachutes from a height of two meters and record the “hang times.” Using the distance formula, d=rt, students compute the rate of descent. The data is collected and organized in a class chart. Students then arrange the parachutes in terms of hang time and examine the shapes for pattern.
