Teacher's Guide: Part 1: Pause Point 2
Watch Video Clips @ XY Encounter Streaming Video Page

Key Phrase: Keisha says: “X equals 4 and y equals 8.”
[Stop the video before she reveals the rule.]
Involve students by having them explore how to complete Keisha’s table, examine patterns, and describe what they notice. Encourage students to state the rule in words and/or symbols. Have them name other values that fit their rule and could go in the table. Thus you’re helping students apply their rule to make predictions: Do you see a pattern appearing here? Describe a rule. [As x increases by 1, the y-value decreases by 2.]
What types of discussions might evolve from these questions?
- Complete Keisha’s table. Can you identify any patterns in Keisha’s table? What other values would be in the table if it continued? [As x increases by 1, y decreases by 2.]
- Have the students complete Max’s table.
- Look for patterns in Max’s table. Can you state a rule? [As x increases by 1, the y-value increases by 1.]
- Are there any values shared by the two tables? What should happen to the graphs if both tables share a pair of coordinates? [If there is the identical ordered pair in Table 1 and Table 2, this value will satisfy both conditions, and when plotted will be the same point on the grid.]

In addition, you may wish to provide a coordinate grid on the overhead projector, and ask students to demonstrate what they think will happen to the points. Here’s an opportunity to clarify, correct misconceptions, or let students express their opinions.
