D.W. Gets Lost
A "Lost" List
Make a list of what to do if lost

Materials
  • marker
  • paper (large sheet)
Directions
At some time or another, most children experience being lost in a store, or otherwise briefly separated from parents or guardians. It's important that they know what to do.
  1. Share your story: Tell your children a story from your childhood about a time you (or someone you knew) got lost. How did you feel? What did you do? Ask your children if they have ever gotten lost, and what they did about it.
  1. Make a list: Work together to create a "What to Do If You Are Lost" list. Ask your children to provide good safety tips, and write down their suggestions. Good guidelines include:
Stay where you are.
Go to a meeting place your family has chosen.
Ask a salesperson, security guard, or police officer to help you.

Talk About It
Assure your children that while the situation might be scary, it will be easier to handle if they know what to do. Work with your children to establish a set of family safety rules for these kinds of situations.
