Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth

It isn't only advertising for tobacco products that are aimed at teens, but also alcohol. This organization from Georgetown University monitors marketing practices of the alcohol industry to America's youth. Special reports related to Hispanic and African American teens exposure to alcohol marketing are posted as well as other topics about radio, television, magazine, and other media of advertising. The Interactive Data Tool: Youth Exposure to Alcohol Advertising in Magazines has a database of alcohol advertising from 2001, 2002 and 2003 by type of alcohol, brand of alcohol and publication.

Bones Inside You

Do you know that your bones are living tissue? This site from the Indianapolis Children's Museum has six games that let kids distinguish between animals with and without bones, careers related to bones, being a bone detective and how to keep your bones strong. The parent section gives details about broken bones, exercise, and healthy vs. unhealthy bones. The teacher section has an additional game, and a 60 page unit of study for 4th-6th grade students, available in PDF. Games require Flash.

Sparky the Fire Dog

The National Fire Protection Association hosts Sparky the Fire Dog site with games for kids and fire safety tips for families. There are more than 20 "cool to do" ideas including holiday activities throughout the year, checklists for grown ups, fire escape planning, coloring pages, and other fun projects for young children. You should install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement, making sure that there is an alarm outside every separate sleeping area. If your house isn't already wired with interconnected smoke alarms in each room, there are wireless brands you should install so that when one alarm sounds, they all sound. When you check your batteries twice a year, remember to test your carbon monoxide detector, too.
