Algebraic Thinking Focus
Many experiences are needed to build understanding of proportional reasoning. The fact that many aspects of our world operate according to proportional rules makes this reasoning essential in the interpretation of real world phenomenon. Thus, proportionality serves as a bridge to the more abstract relationships addressed in the formal study of algebra.
Lesson Objective
Students will create, replicate, and identify patterns while using proportional reasoning to solve problems.
Overview of the Lesson
The teacher administers a modified version of a released fourth grade NAEP item to students and conducts follow-up interviews. Based on the results of those interviews, the teacher designs an appropriate lesson. During the lesson, students work with colored beads in two situations for which proportional reasoning is an appropriate problem solving approach. The teacher will probe for and foster proportional reasoning through modeling, sharing of student thinking, and questioning techniques.
