Algebraic Thinking Focus

Elementary students can understand the basis for proportional reasoning when they can associate the ideas with physical materials and actions. Such experiences are invaluable in laying the foundation for the formal study of algebra. Proportional reasoning is essential in the interpretation of many real world phenomena, a basic goal of algebra.

Lesson Objective

Students will be introduced to proportional reasoning through modeling, student sharing, and questioning techniques.

Overview of the Lesson

After reading Oliver's Fruit Salad to students, the teacher poses several problems about imaginary fruit salads that the students solve as a class. Using pieces of fruit shaped candy, students work in pairs and in small groups to solve other problems that build on the ones solved as a class. Finally, students share their solutions.
