XY Encounter Funded by the

keisha & max The XY Encounter is an action-packed adventure in learning for kids in elementary and early middle school. Join Max and Keisha, two teen sleuths searching for aliens in the New York subway system! Along the way, the two friends must solve a variety of mathematical problems. Full of action and intrigue, the XY Encounter is segmented into four episodes, each five minutes in length:

    Part 1: Coordinate graphing
    Part 2: Measurement and geometry
    Part 3: Number patterns
    Part 4: Interpreting fractions

The XY Encounter consists of the video and a teacher's guide, both of which can be accessed FREE online. (Note: Viewing these episodes requires streaming media software, available free from RealMedia or Microsoft. You may already have such players installed on your computer.) Alternatively, a VHS tape and print guide can be purchased for a nominal charge from ShopPBS for Teachers.

You can have students view each 5-minute episode of the XY Encounter using the student viewing area, links to which are provided on each page of the Teacher's Guide. These links look like this:

Depending on such factors as school system goals, grade level and student ability, the video and support materials are flexible enough to be used in a variety of ways suited to your needs. Suggestions for usage, as well as printable activity sheets, are provided in the Teacher's Guide.
