Key Phrase:

    Max: “But they don’t intersect.”
Keisha: “They would if we extended the graph.”
“Right,” says Max. [End of clip 3.]
Students should complete plotting points on the graph. Ask: what does it mean to “extend” and “intersect?” Inquiring minds might investigate the relationship that the two tables have to the line graphs. Discuss the strategy the students used for plotting points on the graph as well as the geometric qualities of a line. Examine these important points of discovery through discussion:

  • If we extend the table, what will the graph look like? [It would extend in both directions. The arrow indicates that the line continues.]
  • Could every point on the graph be represented on the table? [Every point on the graph, including the whole number values AND the rational number values, could be substituted into the table and would satisfy the condition. So, the graph shows every value, while the table cannot.]
  • Do the line graphs intersect? Where? What does it mean? [They intersect at the point (5,6). These coordinates are listed in and satisfy conditions for both Table 1 and Table 2.]
