Interview outtakes from THE WAR:
"You see, probably on the newsreel or you read about it in the paper about different battles. But you don't actually put him in that position because he's always telling you how everything is fine, everything is no problem. As a matter of fact, he's getting fat, in one letter he says, 'I'm get, I'm eating so much I'm getting fat.' If you could picture that. And he always had the, an upbeat conversation. Never a down. So you always thought, 'Well, everything is all right, you know, Babe is saying it's fine.' At one point, as a matter of fact, my mother had my aunt write a letter in Italian that she had sent to Babe. 'When you get to Rome, when you get to Italy, we have relatives over there. When you get there, show them these letters and they'll treat you well,' and everything else, you know. And at the time, you think, 'Well, yeah, he's going to be going to Italy. He's going to go to Rome and he's going to see his relatives.' Can you imagine that? It's almost, you think about it now and it's, it's so unreal. I mean, this guy's in the middle of a battle and he hasn't got time to go to Italy and do what you're asking him to do, see relatives. You just didn't realize what they were going through. You just couldn't put two and two together. And it was very, very, very difficult to comprehend. You never really know it." |
