Combat
More than sixteen million Americans served in the armed forces during the war. Fewer than a million ever saw serious combat. Those that did learned to endure the hardships of battle, be it on the ground, in the air or on the sea. They endured the terror of being shelled, adjusted to killing and kept going by focusing on the task at hand and, mainly, because they didn't want to let the man next to them down.
