Latino & Native Americans
Despite discrimination at home, the war offered Latinos the opportunity to claim the U.S. as their country and establish their right to equality. Close to half a million enlisted in the armed forces. In the Native-American community, many tribes declared their willingness to fight the "white man's war." More than 10 percent of the Native American population served. Most noteworthy were the Navajo Code Talkers, who devised and communicated an unbreakable code in helping America win the war in the Pacific.
