Daniel Patrick Moynihan
Former United States Senator from New York
1927-2003, b. Tulsa, Okla., grad. Tufts (B.A., 1948; M.A., 1949; Ph.D., 1961). He served in the Department of Labor during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations (1961-65) and later served President Richard M. Nixon as a special adviser. Nixon appointed him Ambassador to India (1973-75) and President Ford chose him to be United States Representative to the United Nations (1975-76). He later represented the state of New York in the US Senate from 1976-2001 and chaired the Senate finance committee from 1993 to 1995, retiring from the Senate in 2001. He was universally recognized on both sides of the aisle as being an upstanding politician and a serious intellectual. His many books include Beyond the Melting Pot (1963), Family and Nation (1986), Came the Revolution (1988), On the Law of Nations (1990), and Secrecy (1998).
