It’s being called Cannes #HeelGate.  Women at the famed Cannes Film Festival have been reportedly turned away from Sunday’s premiere of Todd Haynes’ ‘50s lesbian romance Carol for wearing flats.  To the Contrary interviewed Cindy Williams of Laverne and Shirley fame (about her new book Shirley, I Jest)  and she says leave it to the French. Here's what she told us.

Twitter users pointed out how the incident underscores some of the gender equality problems in the film industry despite the fact that pay equity is one of the big issues up for discussion at the festival.

The complex history of Reconstruction is often overlooked or forgotten altogether. The particular plight of African-American women during this period has faded even farther into history’s margins. African-American women endured sexual violence at the hands of white men determined to restore the sexual codes of the slavery regime. Similar to their fathers, husbands, brothers and sons, African-American women experienced political and economic terror. But these women also endured sexual violence at the hands of white men determined to restore the sexual codes of the slavery regime. When the federal government called for congressional hearings to investigate the Ku Klux Klan in 1871, hundreds of black women came forward.
