Tarana Burke

We speak with the originator of the #MeToo movement

  • Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton: “Social media is a new form of self-empowerment that produced the biggest march ever in the nation capital, and sent a message: this time, women mean business”

  • Ann Stone:“If she wants to emphasize survival, not victimhood, I think that’s wonderful and I think that is something that social media can and will reinforce.”

  • Tarana Burke:“I don’t believe [President Trump]. I believe in action, so words are not as significant as action.”

  • Sam Bennett: “It’s doing two things, it’s removing the cone of silence that often surrounds sexual abuse, sexual violence and allows it to be perpetrated, and it’s building a safe haven of millions upon millions of women who are saying me too.”

  • Patrice Onwuka: “I like her emphasis on the survivors, because it takes a little bit of power away from people who are really not victims at all, but are using it as a ruse.”

White House Domestic Abuse Scandal

Two staffers resign after allegations of abuse

  • Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton: “The fact that it never occurred to him, either in his tweets or when he spoke shows you where [President Trump’s] head is, and it was really disappointing.”

  • Ann Stone: “Hopefully this is a real teachable moment and they can go forward from this.”

  • Sam Bennett:“And let's be clear, it’s not a character flaw, it’s a crime and we have to look at these situations for the crimes that they are.”

  • Patrice Onwuka: “At this point, everyone who may have pending security clearances is probably being scrutinized.”

Tragedy at Florida School

Students demand action on gun control

  • Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton: “Notwithstanding thoughts and prayers of the President, I don’t know if you noticed, we did not even have a moment of silence in the Congress, and I think that was very deliberate, because the Republicans in Congress knew there would be a horrific backlash if they dared come forward with thoughts and prayers when they won’t pass legislation.”

  • Ann Stone: “The point is guns alone are not the problem.”

  • Bonnie Erbe: “There’s been a whole social media movement saying, ‘enough with your thoughts and prayers, we want action, and we want anti-gun legislation.’”

  • Sam Bennett:“The thing that disappointed me about the framing of the White House currently is that guns were not mentioned once.  They are focusing on other things, but not guns.”

  • Patrice Onwuka: “At the same time, there’s nothing wrong in looking at not just guns, but the flags and markers and the things that made this evil young man do what he did.”
