Lobbyists
represent the interests of clients before government officials.
Today, lobbying is a $1.42 billion-a-year industry and an accepted
part of the American political process. Thousands of lobbyists and
dozens of lobbying firms represent corporations, associations and
individuals in every major industry.
Lobbyists deliver their clients' messages in many ways. They might
conduct research, present information, generate publicity, launch
promotional campaigns, make threats of political reprisal or promises
of support.
Lobbyists use these methods not only before members of Congress,
but on their staffs and their committee staffs. In the executive
branch, lobbyists may visit the President, Vice President and cabinet
officers.
In 1998, the chemical manufacturing industry spent $25 million on
lobbying. In that year, the American Chemistry Council (ACC) alone,
spent nearly $5 million and hired or employed more than 50 lobbyists
to represent the interests of its member corporations.
