Peter Infante, Doctor of Public Health, D.D.S.

Peter Infante is director of the Office of Standards Review in the Health Standards Program of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA is the federal agency that sets standards for workplace safety, including limits on exposure to toxic substances. Dr. Infante’s office is responsible for regulation of toxic substances in the workplace. The office holds primary responsibility for reviewing existing OSHA health standards and making recommendations for modifications. Previously, Dr. Infante served as director of OSHA's Office of Carcinogen Identification and Classification where he was responsible for setting priorities for the regulation of cancer-causing chemicals.

An epidemiologist, Dr. Infante holds a Doctorate of Public Health from the University of Michigan. In 1999, Dr. Infante was selected as one of only four epidemiologists world-wide to advise the World Trade Organization (WTO) during its deliberations on the European Union ban of chrysotile asbestos. He has also worked as an epidemiologist with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), a division of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), where he conducted epidemiological investigations to determine associations between exposure to toxic substances and cancer, pregnancy outcome and other chronic disabling conditions.

In 1977, he published the study that confirmed beyond any reasonable doubt that benzene caused leukemia in exposed workers. As an epidemiologist with the Ohio Department of Health’s Division of Chronic Disease in 1975, Dr. Infante investigated the possible relationship between polyvinyl chloride manufacture and increased risk of cancer and congenital malformations among children of the community. He also worked as a consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO), and as an advisor to its International Program on Chemical Safety task group on environmental health criteria. Dr. Infante has published more than 90 articles in scientific and medical journals. He is currently a fellow at the American College of Epidemiology.
