Models of Teaching
In 1987, the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards
(NBPTS) became the first and only organization in the country
committed to developing a set of national standards for
teachers, recognizing those teachers who meet the standards
through National Board Certification. These standards for
excellence in teaching are the building blocks for UNC-TVs
new education series, Models of Teaching. Designed to
celebrate teachers dedication, creativity, knowledge and
commitment in the classroom, as well as to inspire
professional development, the series content supports two
convictions: teachers are the foundation of our system of
education, and excellence in education requires excellence in
teaching.
The series premiere program, No Greater Calling, targeted a
general audience and was followed by a three-part professional
development video designed for new and seasoned teachers
and principals. No Greater Calling provides a broader viewpoint
of the education process focusing on why these models of
teaching are important for the education of America's students.
The one-hour program features profiles of six outstanding
teachers modeling the best practices in the teaching
profession. Through these profiles, the general audience will
gain the understanding of why professional development, high
standards, and the use of best practices are important to
teachers and to our system of public education.
The three professional development programs that followed No
Greater Calling focus more thoroughly on how the Models of
Teaching series can help teachers. These 30-minute programs
explain and demonstrate teacher professional development
skills and techniques based on the established and widely
accepted Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support
Consortium (INTASC) standards, National Board of
Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), and the Interstate
School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ILLSC) standards.
The first instructional program targets aspiring teachers and
reveals how national standards of teaching provide guidance
and support for our nations new educators. The journey to
developing into an accomplished teacher, based on national
core principles, is examined in the second program, while the
third program shows how teacher and school leaders are
cultivated and enriched by specific standards.
Models of Teaching is a partnership between UNC-TV, the
National Humanities Center, the Center for Creative Leadership,
and the Kenan Best Practices Center, part of the UNC Center
for School Leadership Development. The goal of the alliance is
to focus attention on improving education and teacher quality
through national certification. Models of Teaching is funded by
a generous grant from the Kenan Charitable Trust.
