In 1613, following the Time of Troubles, a new tsar was electedthe
16-year-old Mikhail Romanov, who was a relative of Ivan IVs first wife. With
the establishment of the Romanov dynasty, there was more than half a century of
stability, under Mikhail (1613-1645) and his son Alexis (1645-1676). Tsar
Mikhail established civic order and achieved agreements with the Swedes and
Poles, and began a period of consolidation and gradual expansion of Russia.
