On March 1, 1881, Tsar Alexander II was killed by a bomb thrown by I.
Grinevitskii, a student and a member of the revolutionary organization The National Will.
The Cathedral of the Resurrection on the Blood was built to commemorate the
spot where the assassination took place. Alexander II is buried in the
Cathedral of the St. Peter and St. Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg.
