michael romanov

In 1613, following the Time of Troubles, a new tsar was elected—the 16-year-old Mikhail Romanov, who was a relative of Ivan IV’s first wife. With the establishment of the Romanov dynasty, there was more than half a century of stability, under Mikhail (1613-1645) and his son Alexis (1645-1676). Tsar Mikhail established civic order and achieved agreements with the Swedes and Poles, and began a period of consolidation and gradual expansion of Russia.
