Now in his seventh season as National Symphony Orchestra Music Director, Leonard Slatkin's tenure with the Orchestra has been distinguished by highly praised European, Asian, and U.S. tours. Mr. Slatkin has made regular appearances over the last two decades with virtually all the major international orchestras and opera companies, including the New York and Berlin Philharmonics, Cleveland Orchestra, and Amsterdam Concertgebouw, as well as the Metropolitan Opera and the Vienna Staatsoper. He is chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and is now conductor laureate of the Saint Louis Symphony, after serving a highly successful music directorship there for 17 years. Mr. Slatkin's discography includes more than 100 recordings recognized with five Grammy Awards and more than 50 other Grammy nominations. He is also the recipient of numerous prizes, citations, and honorary doctorates.

Throughout his career Mr. Slatkin has demonstrated a continuing commitment to arts education, reflected in his work with student orchestras across the country, benefit performances for youth orchestras in the Washington area and beyond, and numerous appearances advocating arts education in public schools. He is also the founder and director of the National Conducting Institute.
