Senator Christopher J. Dodd is Connecticut's senior senator and is completing his fourth term in the U.S. Senate. Following his graduation from Providence College in Rhode Island, he spent two years in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic. Upon his return to the United States he enlisted in the Army and served in the Reserve. In 1972 he earned a law degree from the University of Louisville and practiced law in New London, Connecticut, before his election to Congress in 1974. He served three terms in the House of Representatives before being elected to the Senate in 1980. His committee assignments include Senate Foreign Relations; Health, Education, Labor and Pensions; Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; and Rules and Administration. From 1995 to 1996 he was the general chairman of the Democratic National Convention. He has been honored as a national Head Start "Senator of the Decade" and has also received the Edmund S. Muskie Distinguished Public Service Award. He lives in East Haddam, Connecticut, with his wife, Jackie Clegg Dodd, and their daughter.
