Senator John McCain graduated from the Naval Academy in 1958 and began a 22-year career as a naval aviator. In 1967 his plane was shot down over Vietnam, and he was held as a prisoner-of-war in Hanoi for more than five years, much of it in solitary confinement. He retired from the Navy in 1981. His military honors include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross. He was first elected to represent Arizona in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982 and, after serving two terms in the House, was elected to the Senate. He is chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee and serves on the Armed Services and Indian Affairs Committees. In 1997 he was named one of the "25 Most Influential People in America" by Time magazine. His best-selling memoir Faith of My Fathers spent 24 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. He has seven children and four grandchildren. He and his wife Cindy live in Phoenix, Arizona.
