Celebrated today as the beloved curmudgeon whose essays on CBS's "60 Minutes" reach million each Sunday evening, Andy Rooney was a respected correspondent for Stars and Stripes during World War II. He reported from virtually every theater of the war, and was a member of the "Writing 69th," the group of courageous correspondents that accompanied American crews on bombing missions over Europe. In his more than half century as a television writer, producer and commentator, Rooney has won numerous awards, including four Emmys. The author of 12 books, he also writes a twice-weekly syndicated column that appears in more than 200 newspapers nationwide.
