Watch Seabrook's most recent appearances on Washington Week
Andrea Seabrook covers Capitol Hill for NPR News. She brings NPR listeners daily breaking news as well as longer, in-depth features on Congress. Her recent work includes a ground-breaking profile of the powerful House Majority Leader and Texan Republican Tom DeLay, an inside look at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, and an audio postcard of a young Democrat pounding the sidewalks for the Gephardt campaign. Seabrook moved to NPR's Congressional beat in January 2003, after serving as a general assignment reporter.
"I love telling people's stories," Seabrook explains. "I love sound -- I'd rather use my ears than my eyes. When you listen to a good story, whether it's a piece on NPR or a story your best friend is telling you, you see the story inside your mind. It becomes yours."
Seabrook began reporting for NPR in 2001, after serving in a variety of editorial and production positions. She joined NPR in 1998 as an editorial assistant for Anthem, an NPR music program. From there she moved to NPR's Mexico Bureau and provided fill-in coverage of Mexico and Central America. She returned to NPR and worked with NPR's Radio Expeditions series, a joint production between NPR and National Geographic, before moving to an editorial assistant position at Morning Edition.
Before coming to NPR, Seabrook lived, studied, and worked in Mexico City, Mexico. She ran audio for movies and television, and even had a bit part in a Mexican Soap Opera, Demasiado Corazon, with Latin superstar Demian Bichir, and Salsa King Willie Colon.
Seabrook earned her bachelor's degree in biology from Earlham College, with study in Latin American literature from La Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City. While in college, she worked at WECI, Earlham College's radio station.
When not on the air, Seabrook plays guitar and tuba, reads lots of science books, explores her Quaker faith, and, of course, listens to the radio. She is married to composer and musician Chris Mandra.
