Gwen's Take: The Perils of the Absolute

I want to own a pair of glasses that will allow me to more accurately see shades of gray.

That way, when bridges fall down, the urgency to find out why -– right away -– will fade. I will more easily understand that it could be poor maintenance as well as outdated design as well as the fact that it got hit by a speeding truck.

I watched the president’s address to the Morehouse class of 2013 this week with special interest. Part of the reason was personal: I had a great time delivering the commencement speech there two years ago. A sea of promising, educated young black men stretched before me as far as the eye could see.

I was certain these men would rule the world.
