Foreign Policy Analyst
(Note for teachers: This assignment should be downloaded and passed directly to students.)
Student Assignment:
Your responsibility is to role-play a Foreign Policy Analyst for one of the 15 United Nations Security Council member nations. As such you have the responsibility to provide a policy paper on, "The Elimination of all Weapons of Mass Destruction in all Countries" which covers:
previous United Nations Actions regarding weapons of mass destruction - particularly whether they worked or not;
the threat of weapons of mass destruction; and
disarming countries, by force if necessary.
In preparing this policy analysis, you will need to address the questions listed below. As you write the paper, however, you need to approach it from the perspective of the country you are representing. (In other words, unless you are the Policy Analyst for the United States, you will not want to expose the American point of view). After you prepare and write your paper, you will present and defend your position to the class. The policy paper should be a minimum of 500-1000 words and when presented orally be 3-5 minutes in length. Use information from the Resources List and your country's United Nation's Website or email your country for their position.
Questions to address:
What is the United Nations stand regarding weapons of mass destruction?
Does your country have weapons of mass destruction?
Which countries have weapons of mass destruction?
What are the threats to world security posed by the existence of weapons of mass destruction?
Do you believe weapons of mass destruction should be eliminated to prevent terrorist groups ever acquiring them?
What threat do weapons of mass destruction constitute to your country; to peace and security in the world?
What recommendations (need to have a minimum of four specific recommendations) do you make for your UN Ambassador? (Be sure to support your recommendations with specific consequences)
Should the United Nations press for the removal of all weapons of mass destruction from all countries that currently possess such weapons? Why or why not?
Do you recommend that United Nations "Peacemaking" troops be sent to countries possessing such weapons to forcibly disarm them?
