On January 8, 2011, an armed gunman opened fired at a "Congress on Your Corner" event in Tucson, Arizona. Six people were killed and 13 others were injured including U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. In the five years that have followed, Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, have become fierce advocates for gun reform, and just this week they were at the White House as President Obama announced new executive action to curb gun violence. Among his proposals: more money for mental health screening and increased requirements for background checks.
