LSU sources report Cheney scheduled to speak at May commencement

(U-WIRE) BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana State University scheduled Vice President Dick Cheney as the spring commencement speaker, sources told The Daily Reveille on Wednesday. Kristine Calongne, director of media relations for the Office of Public Affairs, said University administrators refused to confirm or deny whether Cheney will be attending the event.

The news comes days after Cheney accidentally shot a 78-year-old friend while quail hunting on a South Texas ranch. Harry Whittington suffered a mild heart attack Tuesday but was in stable condition Wednesday, news reports said.

Cheney took full responsibility for the shooting on Wednesday in an interview with Fox News, calling the experience "one of the worst days of my life."

University Chancellor Sean O'Keefe worked directly under Cheney when he was chief of NASA.

Cheney was scheduled to speak at the 2003 spring commencement, but canceled a week before. His wife, Lynne Cheney, spoke in his place.

O'Keefe spoke at this past spring's commencement, and President George W. Bush spoke in spring 2004.
