Next few days may bring largest snowstorm of year to Iowa State U. area

(U-WIRE) AMES, Iowa — The temperatures are dropping, and snow may finally be just around the corner. Snow lovers can look forward to the next few days of cold weather that may be linked with the largest snowstorm of the year.

Beginning Thursday night, temperatures are expected to drop below 20 degrees and bring freezing rain. People may be shoveling their sidewalks and driveways next week just to get on the roads.

"The university does not completely close due to weather," said Warren Madden, vice president of business and finance. "Most of the students at Iowa State University reside close to campus and are able to make it to class safely."

The students are urged to take caution during these harsh weather conditions that could be settling in the next few days.

"Closing the university doesn't typically happen," Madden said. "But we do not want students to take inappropriate risks during these weather conditions."

According to the National Climate Data Center, 2006 was the warmest year ever recorded in the United States following December's unusually high temperatures.

"Students should check the university Web site frequently during bad weather," said Madden. "This will keep the students and faculty updated. The updates will also be broadcast over the radio and local television stations."

As the weather gets colder and more hazardous, students are urged to take the necessary precautions to remain as safe as possible.
