Alum, Kentucky Derby winner contributes $1 million to U. Pittsburgh

(U-WIRE) PITTSBURGH — University of Pittsburgh alumnus James B. Tafel, whose horse Street Sense won the Kentucky Derby on May 5, donated $1 million to the University of Pittsburgh to establish the James B. Tafel Expendable Gift and the James B. Tafel Endowed Student Support Fund. Both endowments will support students in the Joseph M Katz Graduate School of Business and the College of Business Administration.

The gift, which Tafel donated weeks before the Kentucky Derby, is intended to help business students in ways that an ordinary scholarship could not.

According to John T. Delaney, the dean of the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and the College of Business Administration, "Mr. Tafel wants the money to be used to allow students to participate in events such as internships and non-profit experiences that are not supported by financial aid and scholarships."

Tafel graduated from Pitt's business school in 1950 and has generously donated to Pitt's business schools since then. Pitt Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg praised Tafel's gift, saying in a press release, "Jim Tafel has been a great friend of Pitt for many years. Recent events have given us two very big reasons to celebrate — his very generous support of the next generation of Pitt business students and his big victory in the Kentucky Derby".

In addition to his most recent gift, Tafel has created the James Tafel Endowed Internship Fund, the James B. Tafel Endowment Fund and the James B. Tafel Fellowship, all of which are intended to support and improve Pitt's business school and its students. To honor his continued generosity, Tafel was inducted into the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning Society for individuals who have given lifetime gifts of $1 million or more to Pitt.

Including Tafel's gift, Pitt's $2 billion capital campaign has raised approximately $1.05 billion.
