EDITORIAL: Gore's Live Earth sends mixed message
Staff Editorial

(U-WIRE) OXFORD, Miss. — Live Earth, the series of concerts held around the world on July 7, 2007, left many viewers with mixed feelings about its overall effectiveness. The purpose of the concert, organized by Al Gore, was to send a worldwide warning about climate change - global warming - which it did very well. The nine concerts attracted hundreds of thousands of people from across the world to see their favorite artists and many even supported the seven-point pledge.

Hence, the entire problem. Although the message they were sending was great, their promotional tool — a concert, in which over 100,000 people traveled to in not-so-eco-friendly planes, trains and automobiles — was not the most intelligent way to kick off this movement. In actuality, it may have made our environment a bit worse off than it was before. Not to mention the harsh reality of the situation, which is the probability of very many people changing their habits to "heal the planet" without actually feeling the climate change is slim to none.

However it is hard to critize such an admirable effort to inform the world of the dangers of global warming. So we applaud and thank all those that were involved in this movement ... we just wish they would find a more eco-friendly way — more eco-friendly than using special light bulbs — of sending the message.
