Nebraska student organization sponsors 'Rock the Vote' activities
By Jamie Klein

Nightlife on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus is about to get exciting.

Rock the Vote is coming to UNL, brought by university's new group, Campus Night Life.

Students will be able to play Xbox and Wii, sing karaoke, enjoy "mocktails" and create their own campaign buttons in the Nebraska Union on Sept. 26.

Students also can register to vote and learn about this year's presidential candidates during the event.

The JV Allstars and Jackson Waters, brought by KCWL, Lincoln's CW channel, will rock the plaza while students munch on free food and possibly snag a T-shirt or two.

Everything will be free for students from 8:30 p.m. to midnight, thanks to donations Campus Night Life received, said Reshell Ray, associate director of Student Involvement.

Ray said the East Campus Union has been hosting night events for the past five years. Last spring the administration asked her to expand the activities to both campuses.

In April, she took 10 students to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville to take a look at their late night program, called "Friday Night Live."

"We learned a lot," Ray said. "We met with the vice chancellor and individuals in student involvement office."

Shane Blomendahl, a junior agricultural business major, was one of the students who went to UA.

"They utilize their union a lot more than I'd say we do for social activities," Blomendahl said.

At "Friday Night Live," Blomendahl said he saw a comedian and ate some free food in the company of many University of Arkansas students.

He said he wished such events happened at UNL.

"I think it's a really good idea," he said. "It's been something on campus. There are a lot of small activities that are really good. This is something that will be more campus-wide and a bigger event, hopefully will grow."

Ray also said she was hopeful for a good student turnout to the Rock the Vote event Sept. 26.

"We hope that it takes off such that student organizations will also host the individual nights or events in the program," Ray said.

"It's really for the entire campus."
