Silent march planned in honor of MLK Jr. at Ohio U.

A group led by the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity will be marching across the Ohio University College Green Monday morning to honor civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The group will march silently from Galbreath Chapel starting at 10:30 a.m., ending at Baker University Center, where there will be a brunch buffet at 11 a.m. and a keynote from former Colorado Lt. Gov. Joe Rogers.

Rogers’ program, Dream Alive, provides an uplifting commentary on King’s speeches and has been performed at schools, conferences and churches around the country.

“(Rogers) doesn’t imitate Dr. King per se, but during his keynote he kinda just does the ins and outs of Dr. King and his speeches,” said DeAndre Christian, president of Alpha Phi Alpha and the event organizer. “You kinda get a feel for Dr. King.”

This is the eighth year for the Alpha Phi Alpha-sponsored brunch. The national fraternity is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter organization founded by and for African Americans.

“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a prominent member of Alpha Phi Alpha, so that’s one of the reasons why we do it,” Christian said.

Tickets are available at the Multicultural Center in Baker but are selling fast, he added.

“(This event) means a lot, especially to keep the tradition at OU and within my organization itself,” Christian said. “My whole vision was to make it even bigger and better, and I think I’ve done that so far. … I’m just really excited and anticipating the outcome.”
