Linda Robinson

Linda Robinson is a Senior Writer for U.S. News & World Report specializing in military and national security issues. She received the Gerald R. Ford Prize for Reporting on National Defense for 2004. She was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University 2000-01 and was awarded the Maria Moors Cabot prize by Columbia University in 1999. She has also been a Senior Consulting Fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies and a Media Fellow at Stanford's Hoover Institution. Before joining U.S. News in December 1989, Ms. Robinson was Senior Editor at Foreign Affairs magazine. Her book about the U.S. Army Special Forces, Masters of Chaos, was a New York Times bestseller.

Since 2001, Ms. Robinson's work has focused on terrorism and national security, building on her previous coverage of low-intensity conflicts in the 1990s and her study of intelligence and technology at Harvard in 2000-01. Ms. Robinson has made extended trips to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001. Her field reporting has included embedded reporting with conventional and special operations units and the headquarters command. She has written numerous cover stories for U.S. News on the war in Iraq, U.S. counterterrorism strategy, intelligence reform, the hunt for Osama bin Laden, and special operations forces. As Bureau Chief for Latin America in the 1990s she covered six insurgencies in Central and South America, U.S. military interventions in Panama and Haiti, and the region's democratic transition.

Ms. Robinson's work has been published in Foreign Affairs, World Policy Journal, Survival, SAIS Review, The New Republic, The New York Times, Outside, Conde Nast Traveler and elsewhere. She has recently lectured at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Smithsonian Associates, Naval War College, Dallas World Affairs Council, Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association, Joint Special Operations University and the regional studies centers of the National Defense University. She discusses international issues frequently on NPR, CSPAN and cable networks, and is a regular guest on Washington Week in Review.

Ms. Robinson is a longtime member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the International Institute for Strategic Studies and graduated with high honors from Swarthmore College (B.A., Political Science). She serves on two nonprofit boards, the Center for Excellence in Education and the Cabot Advisory Board of Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.
