Conclusion
Ulysses Grant had the rare ability to stay cool in a crisis, and that helped him win the battle of Shiloh for the Union. But was he a hero? The battle was a tremendous shock to the nation. Nobody had expected soldiers to be wounded and die in the sheer numbers they did at Shiloh -- over 23,000 Confederate and Union soldiers were killed. In the press, Grant was portrayed as a butcher.
One thing was clear: it was going to be a bitter and bloody war.
