On May 17, the first group of ten Nashville Freedom Riders approaches Birmingham on a Greyhound bus. The bus is stopped at Birmingham city limits and boarded by police officers, who escort the bus to the Birmingham Greyhound Bus terminal. Two Freedom Riders, Jim Zwerg and Paul Brooks, are arrested. The remaining Riders are detained in the Greyhound Bus terminal and eventually arrested and jailed
