August 27Separation Rapid George Bradley describes the 96th day as "the darkest day of the trip." The crew has come across what seems to be impassable rapids. Bradley's journal description is vivid: "The water dashes against the left bank and then is thrown back against the right. The billows are huge and I fear our boats could not ride them if we could keep them off the rocks. The spectacle is appalling to us.... There is discontent in camp tonight and I fear some of the party will take to the mountains but hope not." |
