Unknown to the men on the expedition, "The Chicago Tribune" publishes a fabricated account of a tragic end to the Powell party. The newspaper bases its story on an account from a man called John Risdon who, claiming to be the sole survivor of expedition, says the party had all drowned, sucked into a whirlpool on the Green River.
