MCCULLOUGH: I think that history will rightly remember Douglas MacArthur as a
glamorous, patriotic, often brilliant, sometimes not so brilliant, infinitely
interesting American leader, who was as gifted at holding center stage as any
of the other great actors of his time, like Roosevelt and Churchill. And you
couldn't react indifferently to Douglas MacArthur. You couldn't shrug your
shoulders at Douglas MacArthur. There was nothing bland about him, nothing
passive about him, nothing dull about him. And there's no question about his
patriotism, there's no question about his courage, and there's no question, it
seems to me, about his importance as one of the protagonists of the 20th
century.
