WWII: The Battle for Leyte ( 2 of 4 )![]() MacArthur was gratified when the October 20th landing, supported by a massive invasion fleet, went smoothly. Once Leyte was secure, he hoped to build airstrips and utilize the spacious anchorage to support future operations. "Leyte was to be the anvil," he wrote in his best MacArthur style, "against which I hoped to hammer the Japanese into submission in the central Philippines -- the springboard from which I could proceed to the conquest of Luzon, for the final assault on Japan itself." |
